Question
How is it that "pulled" muscles take so long to heal?
The process of building muscle requires stretch tension and "micro-tears" for the body to recognize that more force is required to achieve the objective (lifting some weight).
Explain.
Hamstring injuries are the most common injury in sports and have been shown to occur 176 times per NFL season or 5-6 per team each season. Hamstring strains are graded one through three.
What is the difference between the Grades 1 to 3?
What can be done to reduce the risk?
Explanation / Answer
1. The difference between the grades 1,2,3 indicates the level of injury. In grade-1, injuries are mild with no loss of strength or function. In grade-2, injuries include partial or incomplete pain and tears and has moderate loss of strength. In grade-3, injuries are severe which includes more pain, rupture and complete tears and has significant loss of strength and function.
2. To reduce the risks, continual physical examinations has to be carried out.Advanced radiological evaluation should be frequently used. Ideally a classification or scoring system would guide treatment to provide enough time for complete healing, avoid premature return to activity and decrease risk of reinjury.
