Question
Choose the member of each pair below that should be expected to have the higher metabolic rate, or choose both if they are not expected to differ in MR. Assume everything about the people is the same except the one characteristic named and it’s direct consequences; for example, male and female would be expected to have different hormones but not necessarily different activities or body compositions. (½ each)
A. Andy is male, Betty is female. Both are 37 yrs old.
B. Cheri is tall and thin, Debby is more short and wide.
C. Emil is male, Fanny is female. Both are 8 years old.
D. Granny is 97 years old, Hermione is 37 years old.
E. Isolde has a higher percentage of lean muscle than does Jenna. F. Karl releases less thyroid hormone than Larry.
Explanation / Answer
A. Andy and Mary both are 37 years of age.
However Andy is male and Mary Is female. Therefore Andy is exxpected to have higher lean mass.
Lean mass increases Metabolic rate, as lean mass is directly proportional to the amount of muscle tissues present in body.
Muscle is metabolically active tissue.
So Andy will have more MR.
B. Cherri being tall and thin will have more metabolic rate.
Being thinner itself points to higher rate of cataboloism
C. Recent studies are showing that there is no gender influence on metabolic rate when it comes to prepubertal children.
Therefore, both being 8 years of age, Emil & Fanny both will have similar MR
D. Hermione being 37 will have higher MR as compared to very old Granny
E. Islode will have higher MR than Jenna as Islode has higher lean muscle(Explained above)
