Explanation / Answer

Ans.1 The process of assessment is used to assess psychological functioning of an individual and/or evaluate presence of certain disorders. This process entails a lot of sub-components, for e.g., interview information, psychological testing, informal survey, medical evaluation etc.

Before the assessment all individuals important to client are identified. For e.g., client's parents, partner, psychiatrist, etc. During the assessment, each of these important individuals are either interviewed or asked to fill a questionnaire in order to gain understanding of client's problem and the insight of others. After the assessment, the psychologist scores the questionnaire if any and analyzes the score. And along with the information from interviews, he/she gains an understanding of the client's problems and formulates a diagnosis. The assessment could also generate an evaluation of general functioning of client.

Ans 2. Standardization - It is the process of trying out a test on a group of people to see the score which are typically obtained. This provides us with two values : mean and a standard deviation. When an individual gives a test, he or she can determine how far is the score from the mean, i.e. how much above or below is it relative to the normative group.

Norm-Referenced Test - They are used in situations where we want to compare the individuals according to their scores on the test. Norm-referenced tests enables to rank the individuals and find out if a particular person performed better or worse than the hypothetical average scores.

Criterion-Referenced Test - While norm-referenced tests compare and rank individuals based on their position on the bell-curve distribution(or their relative position from average scorer), the criterion-referenced test have a fixed set of standard against which the score of an individual test-taker is measured.

Domains - Broadly, there are four domains of assessment: Educational, Vocational, Psychological and Medical domain. Each domain measures different capabilities or skills.

Basal Levels - It represents the level of skill below which the test-taker gives correct answers for all the items of test.

Ceiling Levels - This level represents the level of skill above which all the items of the test will be incorrect.
