Question

I wrote this essay and i want someone to help me in grammar and add some sentences or words to make my essay much better?

Food insecurity and hunger is the problem faced by millions of Americans each and every day. According to a survey carried out in 2007, 11% of United States population is insecure of food. Food insecurity and hunger are major and prevalent health issues faced by the American population. Conforming with Hunger study which was in 2010 found that around 37 million American are facing Hunger.

Once in my country Saudi Arabia I worked for a ASJ (Al-bir Society Jeddah) through a program in my high school in 2011 who works to supply food to areas which have more severe hunger conditions. I was assigned a task of fighting against hunger and was sent South of Jeddah city. I was supervising their summer food distribution program. As soon as I reached there and travelled through some South. I realized that it is the right place to fight against hunger because I can clearly see many half-clothed, shoeless, sick and frail children. Whenever I meet them most of the times they were malnourished.

Hunger and food insecurity doesn’t mean having nothing to eat. It means not having a proper nutritious diet. The food insecurity has now been recognized by the government of United States of America. In addition, the United States of America agricultural department which works for nutritious and ensures healthy and safe food for everyone describes food in security as “a household level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food” (USDA.gov)” The government is depicting the food insecurity as the unavailability of nutritionally adequate or safe food or no ability to gain such food or food is finite or uncertain for a family. Hunger is an epidemic that is a big threat to the future of the nation. As a result, 37 million hungry Americans, and 45.1 percent of them are children which means a huge number. The children will be the future of this country and if the rate of hunger still increase that will be influencing their mental, physical wellness, and improvement (Coleman-Jensen, Alisha & Nord, Mark. (2012)). Children in food insecurity settings is more likely to have poor health.

Doug O Brien who is a leader of public policy and research at Chicago based Second harvest. He is also the deputy director of Illinois department of healthcare and Family services. While discussing the food insecurity he says “we’ve seen a real shift in who we serve. A decade ago, it was almost always homeless, single men and chronic substance abusers. Now we have children and working families at soup kitchens”. He is trying to awake us of increasing malnutrition and hunger in children and families. It means that the upcoming generation of the children is not fully prepared for the workforce.

The economic research reported that they found “85.1 percent of American households were food secure throughout the entire year of 2011 and 14.9 percent reported as food insecure (Coleman-Jensen, Alisha & Nord, Mark, 2012).” Out of the 14.9 households that were food insecure within the United States in 2011, lived 16.7 million children who were under the age of 18, hungry, and living in poorness. Factually, 1 out of 5 children in the U.S. are suffering from food insecurity (Coleman-Jensen, A., Nord, M., Andrews, M., &Carlson,S., 2012). Food security and good nutrition are components to establishing a healthy foundation for the future of children. In addition, hunger may affect pregnant mother because she is unable to provide efficient amounts of nutrients for the fetus and herself. The health consequences are detrimental, long term and permanent (Tarasuk. 2001).

Hunger is a very big threat to America’s future generations. If we draw the picture of this scenario like A three years old boy lives in a locality where there is shortage of food and poverty everywhere. The child never gets adequate food for his growth and development. He faces malnutrition and often becomes sick because of being malnourished. When he becomes five and goes to school. He struggles to be regular in school because of getting sick and few years later when he goes to secondary school. He struggles with his academics because he is physically and mentally not fit for study as the diet which he received was not a healthy diet and quantity of food he received daily was inadequate to develop growth hormones and brain muscles. It sins obvious that he will lack behind of others in every walk of life as he will be unable to meet the workforce in professional life also. The food insecurity remains with that boy and then afterwards transferred to his family. It is proving food insecurity as an epidemic which will destroy generation of generations.

According to research malnourished and malnutrition children are both physically and mentally weaker than other children. Food insecurity is connected to expanded hospitalizations, chronic diseases, formative issues, poor oral health, obesity, stomachaches, headaches and colds. Children who are food insecure are more prone to mental and behavioral problems while they are in school such as truancy, lateness, tormenting, hyperactivity and aggression (Kleinman, Murphy, Little, Pagano, Wehler, Regal & Jellinek, 1998). Food insecure adults and seniors have a higher risk to getting diabetes and a variety of chronic diseases such as hypertension, heart diseasse and cancer (Seligman, Kanaya & Kushel, 2007).

Many health professionals, educated scholars are striving hard to find solutions and resolutions for this major problem. Government and non-governmental organizations, Ngo’s are playing their role to remove hunger from the society. Feeding America is our nation’s largest food bank. It works to resolve the issues of food insecurity there are many Ngo’s who work to supply food to the remotest parts of the United States of America. They are providing complete to assistance to the families who are facing the poverty, hunger and food insecurity. We can only defeat and eradicate this epidemic by planning and drafting community based strategies and preventive measures. We also should analyze the links between the poverty hunger and food insecurity. I think governmental and non-governmental organization should work together for the fight against hunger. There should be monthly meetings between them and they should draft communities based strategies.

Explanation / Answer

Essay was very well written. I have tweaked it just a bit and corrected some sentences as I saw fit (since this was posted in Psychology and not in English).

Food insecurity and hunger are two major, and prevalent health issues faced by millions of Americans each and every day. According to a survey carried out in 2007, 11% of United States population have food insecurity. Conforming with the Hunger study, which was conducted in 2010, it was found that around 37 million Americans are facing hunger. Food insecurity is defined as a condition that is related to the supply of food, and each individuals' access to it, which can become limited due to lack of resources, shortage of produce, or lack of money.

While in my country, Saudi Arabia, I worked for a ASJ (Al-bir Society Jeddah) through a program in my high school in 2011. ASJ works to supply food in the areas which are plagued by severe hunger condition. I was assigned to the task of fighting against hunger and was sent to the South of Jeddah city. While assigned there, I was in-charge of supervising their summer food distribution program. When I reached there, I had the opportunity to travel through some parts of the Southern areas. And, I realized that it is the right place to start fighting against hunger. I saw many children who were half-clothed, shoeless, sick and frail. Most of the children I met were malnourished due to the shortage of nutritious food.

Hunger and food insecurity does not mean having nothing to eat. It means not having a proper nutritious diet. Food insecurity has now been recognized by the government of United States of America as a prevalent issue. The Agricultural Department of the United States of America, which is dedicated to providing of nutritious, healthy and safe food, describes food insecurity as “a household level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food” (USDA.gov). The government describes food insecurity as ‘the unavailability of nutritionally adequate or safe food’, or as ‘the inability to gain nutritionally adequate or safe food’ or ‘as food being finite or uncertain for a family’. Hunger is an epidemic that is a big threat to the future of the nation. This endemic has left 37 million Americans hungry, and 45.1 percent of them are children which translates to a huge number. The children are the future of this country and if the rate of hunger keeps on increasing, it will have a huge impact on their mental wellbeing, physical wellness, and improvement (Coleman-Jensen, Alisha & Nord, Mark. (2012)). Children who live in a food insecure environment are more likely to have poor health and development.

Doug O’Brien is the director of public policy and research at Second Harvest. He is also the deputy director of Illinois department of healthcare and Family services. While discussing about food insecurity he said “We’ve seen a real shift in who we serve. A decade ago, it was almost always homeless, single men and chronic substance abusers. Now we have children and working families at soup kitchens”. He is trying to wake us up by trying to address the topic of ever increasing malnutrition and hunger in children and families. It means that the upcoming generation of the children are not fully prepared to constitute the future workforce.

The economic research reported that they found “85.1 percent of American households were food secure throughout the entire year of 2011 and 14.9 percent reported as being food insecure" (Coleman-Jensen, Alisha & Nord, Mark, 2012). "Out of the 14.9 households that were food insecure within the United States in 2011, there were 16.7 million children who were under the age of 18, living in hunger, and in poverty of health. Factually, 1 out of 5 children in the U.S. are suffering from food insecurity" (Coleman-Jensen, A., Nord, M., Andrews, M., &Carlson,S., 2012). Food security and good nutrition are basic components to establishing a healthy foundation for the future of children. Additionally, hunger may affect pregnant mother because she is unable to provide efficient amounts of nutrients for the fetus and herself. The health consequences are detrimental, long term and permanent (Tarasuk. 2001).

Hunger is seen to be a very big existential threat to America’s future generations. We can draw a picture of this future from the following scenario. “A three-year-old boy living in a locality where there is a shortage of food and poverty is everywhere. The child never gets adequate food for his growth and development. He faces malnutrition and often becomes sick because of being undernourished. When he reaches the age of five and goes to the school, he struggles to be regular in school because of his failing health. And, a few years later, when he goes to the secondary school, he struggles with his academics because he is physically and mentally unfit for study. This happens because the diet he received was not a healthy diet and the quantity of food he received daily was inadequate to promote growth of hormones and brain muscles. It seems obvious that he will lag behind others of his same age in every walk of life. He will also be unable to make up for the workforce in his professional life. The food insecurity will remain with that boy throughout his life and it will be transferred to his family due to his lack of providence.” This scenario proves food insecurity as an epidemic which will destroy generations and generations of families.

According to the research, children battling with malnourishment and malnutrition are both physically and mentally weaker when compared to other children of their same age. Food insecure adults and seniors have a higher risk to getting diabetes and a variety of chronic diseases such as hypertension, heart diseases and cancer (Seligman, Kanaya & Kushel, 2007).

Many health professionals, and educated scholars are striving hard to find solutions and resolutions for this major problem. Government and non-governmental organizations, are trying their best to tackle and to remove hunger from the society. Feeding America (United States-based nonprofit organization) is our nation’s largest food bank. With its network of 200 food banks, it works to resolve the issues of food insecurity. There are many NGO’s (non-governmental organizations) and non-profit organizations who are working tirelessly to supply food to the remotest parts of the United States of America. They are trying to provide complete assistance to the families who are facing poverty, hunger and food insecurity. We can only defeat and eradicate this epidemic by planning and drafting community-based strategies and taking preventive measures. We also should try to analyze and find links between the poverty, hunger and food insecurity. I think both governmental and non-governmental organization should join hand and work together to fight against hunger. There should be monthly meetings between them and they should draft community-based strategies. This will help America secure its future for its children and their upcoming generations.
