Commercial surrogacy in India
This has become one of the major concerns in the developing countries where the families from developed countries would be paying lump sum amounts to the women from average to below average families, and their only and only concern would be to get a foetus out and not the woman who is carrying the foetus. Here have been a number of cases where the woman carrying the baby Would not only be given appropriate medication help, their demise or any complication with their health as a fault of the doctor or the administration would not even be given importance such that their news would not even be mentioned.
One of the estimates show that almost 25000 children every year would be born by surrogacy in India. If looked into, there have been many such cases where the women have died as a result of negligence by the doctor. Due to its great amount of poverty and such a huge population with an increasing demand for children. Not only are the surrogacy levels high in the smaller countries, but there are huge number of clinics present in the larger cities, with most of the baby demands coming from outside of India. This is done majorly in India, since the cost of fertility treatments are lower in India. This has attracted greater number of couples to flood in and carry out these procedures.
This is a huge industry that is operating and the worst part is, there is no check the total working. There have no regulations placed on this industry, with awaiting bills and increased controversies. There are clinics and doctors who don not even bother to explain the procedure to the women participating in the procedure. These women are not even compensated enough such that they could maintain the minimum diet to carry themselves from the caesarean delivery. This boom in the industry came up because of high technology and the affordability in the medical practices, thus being named as medical tourism.
Though the government today tries to carry out measures such that commercial surrogacy could be banned, the efforts don’t seem to be enough. Today, only close relatives are allowed to vouch for one another, though the theory might take some while to be implemented. This might come down as a heavy hit on the industry that is thriving at its best. The new type would be known as “altruistic surrogacy” and have to show proper authentications in order to be allowed any such treatments.
Ethically, it is wrong as women are not even given enough compensation, not explained the methods and risks involved in the treatment. The child is given away from the mother, a part of what they have carried for almost 9 months. Many a times, the child may also be disowned by the family who’s taking them. Women may die and not even allowed proper medication. They may also be seen as an outcast from the society or no psychiatric support or medical insurance.
