There is a widespread belief that babies understand language only as they begin to speak. But through a number of works it has been established that the child hears and understands more than we know. The period between 2-5 years, where a toddler starts to speak is considered vital, since his speaking abilities would develop.

Should these findings have an impact on our behavior with regard to our own personal behavior, interactions with others or our interaction with babies?

These findings show that the baby understands. So it is important to talk to the baby in a tone which would soothe him and not stress him. When we utter words in front of the baby, it is important that the tone should be kept warm and not stressed. Also, the caregiver or anybody talking around the baby should take care that their tone should reflect joy and surprise, rather than anger and fear. Not only the caregiver, but also the adults who are conversing around the baby should take care of their tone. Also, facial expressions should not show any kinds of distress.

How would you go about explaining to parents, family members and care givers the importance of these findings?

In order to explain the parents, we require to explain them how the parent's behaviour influences a toddler. We can explain by starting as follows :

Did you know that the child learns to understand much before they start to speak. - this would create a sense of surprise and curiosity in them which would bind them. Then we can explain how the voice, tone, gestures, expressions impact a child's development. We can explain them that with a distressed environment the child can begin to have more anger issues and frustration that might passively come up as an adult. Elaboration of these facts will explain the parents very well of the impact of their gestures in front of the baby.

When a child is accidentally moving towards a fence , the caregiver asks her to not go there in a strict voice. This makes them understand that the adult is not happy with their action. This makes them not do it next time.

Or when a child is not eating her food and constantly purposely puking whatever you put in her mouth as an action of notoriety. If you raise your voice along with widened eyes, that signals the baby that the caregiver is angry, and she does not repeat the action.
