Question

For the purposes of this course, the story of the origins of Islam can be roughly divided into two parts. The first is the "sacred" story and the second, the "academic" story. The sacred story is the story of faith, the story of the believing Muslim that plots the rise of Islam as the one true path. The academic story is the story of the historian, the story that can be pieced together drawing on the various layers of available evidence. Drawing on the PBS documentary and the textbook (and other sources as appropriate), provide examples that characterise each of these different kinds of stories, sacred and academic, and discuss the different contributions they each make to an understanding Islam. While sometimes they are at odds, are these stories necessarily incompatible?
