Question

Please write down your response after reading the paragraph. (At least 5 sentences long. 150-200 words)

It is true that we would all like to protect ourselves, because I, for one, agree it is our natural instinct to protect self. If I was driving a normal car and going in full speed, and I see a group of people in the way, yes, my guts will tell me to swerve--moving away from the group of people, but this is not with a mindset of giving up my life for them. This would be me trying to save us all. However, if I knew before hand the options of having to give up my life for theirs or vise versa, I would honestly take the utilitarian perspective of taking action that will minimize total harm, even if that action will kill me or whomever the bystander is. This is sad, however, I thought this through and realized that if I was to ever watch a group of people die by my self-driven car, I would be dying just by the traumatic effect it will have on me. I would blame myself, give up the car and not invest in one again, and definitely feel selfish for letting those people die.
With the duty-bound principle like “thou shalt not kill”, I do not understand where’s the logic in not allowing one person to die, but rather letting the car “take its course even if that’s going to harm more people.” If the person choose to swerve and kill him/herself, that’s killing self. If the person chooses to let the car take its course and kill a group of people, that’s still killing. My concern is: If the self-driven car is what kills an individual, a car cannot go to jail. Thus, I am assuming that is what’s meant by “not killing.” Who will be taking responsibility for all those people? Overall, I see myself moving out the way in hopes to not hit anyone, and if I die, at least I died trying.

Explanation / Answer

Hello

yes, you died trying that is more like it , I think this decision is more positive and if I were you I would do this too.I don't see a point in killing 5 innocent people and also if there is a chance to save both I think there is no great thing for that day bit if you could save one I think what you said and your decision is so great because end of the day everyone needs to live and their life is precious previous too but to make a decision like this is so selfless and great and I only have good things to say for that person.

Thankyou!
