Question
Materialism -- the false philosophical theory that regards matter and its motions as constituting the whole of reality. In short, there is nothing but matter. According to this false way of viewing reality, very prevalent in our culture today, there is no such thing as spiritual reality and there is no such thing as the Super-natural, i.e., God. Thus, all phenomena, including our mind and its rational thoughts, are due to and products of only material causes and origins. Materialism denies the entire reality of both the spiritual and the supernatural realms. Materialist philosophies, aka, materialism, lead to the belief that either God does not exist or that we cannot have any certain evidence that God does exist, so let's just forget about the entire notion of whether there is anything or any One Who is greater than the human person -- and to Whom we are ultimately accountable for our actions. Let us just try to live our life in the here and now - and set up reality according to our liking -- taking care of the problems around us by ourselves -- as we see fitted to the moment and circumstances. This false philosophy tries to convince us that it is we, ourselves, who give our own lives meaning, in the here and now, which is all that counts. Thus, with this philosophy in mind, the purpose of life becomes to go for all the gusto we can get, in the immediate present -- resulting in the useless attempt to try and bury the whole idea of a Transcendent God, Who is greater and other than ourselves, in the dustbins of history. Materialist views lead to the mistaken notion in our times that we have outgrown our need for God because our human minds have grown so intelligent and capable. Materialist views also tend to hold that humankind has evolved from fungi, through a process of random variation and natural selection of the strong over the weak, in a process referred to as Darwinian, atheistic evolution. Human beings are thus seen as nothing but a compilation of material cells, that have somehow learned to think - with this life as we see it being all that there is -- without any, ultimate, transcendent and eternal meaning and consequences or purpose in the Plan of God.
