Question
Meet Savannah. Savannah is five years of age and the cutest five year old you have ever met. Yes folks, Savannah is also cuter than your child(ren). While at Target (a convenience store) with her parents, Savannah sees a Hello Kitty stuffed animal and decided that she must have it. She looks at her parents with the “eye” and droopy lips, and says as nicely as she can, “can I please have the Hello Kitty doll.” Her parents looked at one another and agreed that purchasing the hello kitty doll at this time would not be financially feasible for the family. Her father looked into her eyes and as nice as possible uttered the word “no.” After hearing the word “no” and allowing for it to process through her five year old mind, Savannah without warning transformed into her alter ego “Storm.” She starts to yell, cry, and scream, throwing herself to the ground and spilling tears all over the aisle. Seeing such a theatrical display and feeling a bit self-conscious her parents conceded and bought the Hello Kitty doll for Savannah. At this point, everyone was happy (Savannah who was now back to her normal self, Savannah’s parents, other people shopping at target, and of course Target). Based on your reading of the week please explain how Savannah escaped conditioning. Also share in detail how her current behavior can be transferred any used in the future to address other similar situations.
Explanation / Answer
The current behavior of the girl reflects the childhood emotions and a proper conditioning. The girl had learned the benefits if aggressive behavior to fulfill her need and conditioned it with emotional expressions.
In the first case, she used primary and soft expressions while the second term came with aggressive conditions. Her parents satisfied her aggressive behavior it means she learned the process if emotional expressions and using this for needs. in this case, her parents should not bring things during emotional expressions because it will reinforce her conditioned behavior.
