Question

Mapping cerebral circulation with angiograph Mr. Samuel was having bouts of light-headedness and slurred speech that alarmed his family, so they rushed him to the hospital. The attending physician was concerned that Mr. Samuel may b experiencing a stroke (damaged brain cells from lack of blood supply) due to a narrowed artery or blood clot in his brain. The physician ordered a cerebral angiogram, an x-ray image that would show the circulation in Mr. Samuel's head and neck. The physician explained to the family that the doctor performing the procedure would insert a tube called a catheter into Mr. Samuel's thigh and guide it through his arteries to his neck. There, a contrasting agent, or dye, would be released to generate the image. The image obtained from the procedure showed that Mr. Samuel had suffered a minor stroke. The report said that he had an 80 percent blockage of the vertebral artery on his left side. The doctor told the family that Mr. Samuel was fortunate to have had the blockage where he did because he would have suffered a more serious stroke if the blockage had occurred elsewhere The angiography required a catheter to be guided from arteries in Mr. Samuel's thigh all the way to the base of his neck. Name the vessels through which this catheter would travel. 2 Where do you think the dye would be released? Why is that the best place for it to be released? Can you explain what the doctor meant when he said that Mr. Samuel was lucky to have had the blockage where he did? Where do you think a more serious blockage would be?

Explanation / Answer

Ans 1 ..In the thigh The major artery is the femoral artery .The father or would travel through femoral artery which is in direct continuitation of aorta

Ans 2...The dye would be release in aorta .The major blood vessel of the body which is supplying whole of the body and the brain also.thr best place is aorta.

For brain specifically carotid arteries is 2nd most common site

Ans 3...If vertebral artery is blocked ,there are collatral collection that supply the brain and more over vertebral artery supply to a specific area only.

If carotid artery is blocked it would be a major problem.because it is the it is the ultimate artery to brain.all the arteries that are supplying brain are branches of carotids and it is a single artery each side with no colletral circulation
