Question
This chapter covers Water, Electrolytes and Temperature Regulation in the human body. Water is the most important nutrient, and except for minerals, the simplest nutrient. We can survive weeks without food, but can only survive maybe a week without water. Electrolyte balance in the body is important for normal functioning on a daily basis. Physically active individuals and the elderly need to really take into consideration the heat in regards to regulating temperature.

When reading about water and how blessed we are to have clean water, I thought about those without clean water in the world. I also thought about those in Flint, Michigan dealing with the water crisis and the lead contamination. Below is a link to a short clip on the Flint, Michigan water crisis. Open the link and watch it.

Part 1 (5 points)
A) Discuss what mineral they found in the Flint, Michigan water and how it is affecting the people (especially the young). What is your opinion on this crisis and what should be done?
B) Do you think that the water we drink is safe? Are you a bottled water person or do you drink from the tap? For those that live on Long Island, is the water you drink safe? Here is a clip to help you understand what I saw on the news the other day. I want to hear your opinion on this.

Part 2 (5 points)
A) If you are going to run a marathon on a hot, humid, sunny day, what would you need to do regarding consumption of fluids, including carbohydrates and electrolytes before, during, and after the race? Why is this important - (discuss key guidelines for consuming water, electrolytes, and carbohydrates before, during, and after exercise during this strenuous activity).
B) Discuss what happens to your body when you become dehydrated owning to excessive body water loss or lowered intake? (what happens to the blood, body cells, and organs, glands, and hormones).
Explanation / Answer
Part 1
A) Flint Michigan water crisis started in April 2014. The drinking water supply of Flint was shifted from detroit water to the Flint river. As the Flint river had high chlorine concentration, it leached lead from the water supply pipes. This led to high concentration of lead in drinking water.
The children and infants along with adults were exposed to high lead content leading to lead poisoning and heavy metal intoxication.
In my opinion till the crisis is solved people should switch to bottled water and filtered water instead pf using tap water for cooking and drinking. All the old corrosive water supply pipes should be changed. The water should be treated well and made sure that it is safe for human consumption before releasing it. A better water treatment plant and a good committee should be made for water testing. Time to time water testing should be done.
B) Many water acts have been passed by the government to make sure that the water humans consume is safe. But still use of tap water for drinking is not totally safe. The water might get contaminated in water tanks or supply pipes. One should go for filtered water. I use bottled water. Bottled water is sufficiently treated to make it fit for human consumption. Also by using bottled water you are safe from water borne disease outbreaks. But before using bottled water make sure that the water is added with sufficient minerals.
Recent studies show that Long Water island contains a man-made chemical - 1,4-dioxane. It is used in many personal care products like shampoos. 1,4 dioxane is considered to be carcinogenic which makes it unfit for drinking.
