Explanation / Answer

1.

The 12 cranial nerves and their functions are:

Cranial Nerve I is Olfactory and function is that it gives the sense of smell

Cranial Nerve II is Optic and function is Sight

Cranial Nerve III is Oculomotor and function is that it helps to move the eyelids and adjusts the lens and pupil.

Cranial Nerve IV is Trochlear and function is eye movement that is it helps to move the eyeballs for downward and upward eye movement

Cranial Nerve V is Trigeminal and function is facial sensations like Mastication, Pain, touch etc.

Cranial Nerve VI is Abducens and function is eyeball movement

Cranial Nerve VII is Facial and function is facial expressions, taste, saliva secretion etc.

Cranial Nerve VIII is Vestibulocochlear and function is Hearing and Equilibrium(Balance)

Cranial Nerve IX is Glossopharyngeal and function is swallowing, phonation of pharynx, gag reflex etc.

Cranial Nerve X is Vagus and function is the movement of Visceral muscles like Heart, Lungs, etc

Cranial Nerve XI is Spinal Accessory and function is the movement of head and shoulders, trapezius movement etc.

Cranial Nerve XII is Hypoglossal and function is swallowing and movement of the tongue for speech.

2.

Plexus or Nerve plexuses is the intermingling of different nerves in the form of a network.

Major nerve plexuses of the body are

(a) Cervical plexus with the main motor nerve being the Phrenic nerve.

(b) Brachial plexus with the main peripheral nerves being Axillary nerve, Radial nerve, Median nerve, Musculocutaneous nerve and Ulnar nerve

(c) Lumbar plexus with the main nerve being femoral nerve which is the largest nerve in this plexus.

(d) Sacral plexus with the main nerve being the Sciatic nerve which is the largest nerve found in the human body.
