Affected system:
Skeletal
Respiratory
Cardiovascular
Integumentary
Special Senses
Organ Fragility
Precautions:
What precautions should healthcare workers implement of osteogenesis imperfecta when caring for individuals diagnosed with this rare bone disease?
Treatment:
What treatment (if any) is utilized for this rare disease process of osteogenesis imperfecta? Does the different type of this disease require varying treatment plans?
Diagnosis:
How would you diagnose this bone disease osteogenesis imperfecta? What clinical diagnostic aids would you utilize in this process and why?
Differential Diagnosis:
What varying specialties might be involved in this differential diagnostic process of osteogenesis imperfecta and why? Define your reasoning.
Explanation / Answer
Osteogenesis imperfecta is genetic disorder that results from a lack of protein collagen, causes brittle bones that break easily.
System affected
-skeletal:short, small body deformed bones, kyophotic spine, traingular shaped face with broad forehead
-respiratory:barrel shaped rib cage
-cardiovasular system:heart defects seen frequently
-muscle fatigue, curved limbs, blue or gray tint in the whites (sclera) of the eye.
-brittle and underdeveloped teeth, constipation, delays in motor developments.
Precautions
Certain precautions should be taken for patients. There should not be discourage from increased mobility which increases bone loss and fragility leading to more fracture.
Treatment
There is no definitive cure for OI.
It is treated primarily by managing fracture and promoting as much mobility and independence as possible.
Physical therapy and exercise
Surgey
Medications and other experimental therapies
Healthy lifestyle
Diagnosis
Diagnosis can be make on the basis of presence of fracture and other clinic features. Many laboratory test are available to confirm a diagnosis of OI
Differential diagnosis
Osteoporosis: decreases bone density and body stops producing as much bone. But it occurs in elder people.
Progeria:but all other symptoms may seen like children looks like elderly people in early age.
Osteopetrosis:here bone becomes more dense.
