Question

A. People who are experiencing an anxiety disorder will exhibit anxiety in some way. People who are experiencing a stress disorder will most often also exhibit anxiety in some way, as well. How would you go about finding out if your client is experiencing an anxiety disorder or a stress disorder? This is a very simple question that begs for a simple answer. Don’t make it complicated.

B. What is the primary difference between all of the disorders in this section (anxiety, stress, dissociative, somatoform, etc.) and psychotic disorders?

Explanation / Answer

A. Although stress-related disorders and anxiety disorder may share a similar set of symptoms, there is a fundamental difference between them. Stress disorders occur in response to a threat in any given situation. The symptoms subside when an individual is removed from the stress inducing situation. Anxiety, on the other hand, is enduring and sustained. It does not fade when the threat is mediated.
