CASE STUDIES IN HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT 221 CASE 4-17 Access to Health Information for Treatment Lakeside Hospital takes patient privacy seriously. The hospital policy states that only healthcare profes- sionals directly involved in patient care should have access to patient data. The hospital has had several incidents in which a patient had an adverse outcome because the nurse who had access was at lunch and the nurse covering did not have all of the information that was required to provide care. 1. What options does the hospital have? 2. What would you recommend? Justify your recommendation.

Explanation / Answer

1. The hospital can restrict the data access to individuals who are related with the patient and with the physician and the nurse who are looking into the case. The hospital needs to monitor that the data is not used or accessed by others for any other purpose. The hospital has to have strict norms and guidelines regarding the same so that there is no violation or breach.

2. I would recommend that confidential data should be protected and kept confidential and it should be shared to individuals who actually require such information regarding the patient and the source of the information should be a common location, which can be a database which can be accessed by authorized individuals only in order to avoid data breach.
