To me, a problem employee is someone whose actions directly impact the organization in a negative way; specifically when exhibited in a chronic pattern. Problem employees may not necessarily be someone with a malicious intent, but may simply be someone unenthusiastic or ill-positioned within the company. As I'm sure we'll discover, a problem employee is a multifaceted idea. There are a wide array of situations where someone could be a problem employee. Problem employees should fall into three different categories: employees to be terminated, employees to be reengaged in their current position, and employees to be reassigned to another position within the company. I believe that we should examine problem employees from the perspective that we should do everything we can to avoid termination. As a result, two of the categories I believe are most relevant involve keeping that person at the company in some form or another. An employee change shows faith in the employee and allows us to possibly develop their abilities on a more personal level; monitoring this process along the way. In my opinion, the most difficult of these employee types to deal with would be the employees you choose to reengaged in their current position. Termination and reassignment both transfer that person to a new "space" which allows for a new chance and a new outlook. With re-engagement, you have to do a full evaluation of that employee's current status and develop a plan to revitalize them in that position. Motivation can be a difficult human resource task at any level.
