Problem 57.15 Quesation Help A production process at Kenneth Day Manufacturing is shown in the figure below. The driing operation occurs sertely fm, and simultaneously with, the sawing and sanding, which aro indepondeont sequensial opeut needs to go through only one of the three assembly operations (the operations are in parallel). Assembhy 0.8 units/h 2.1 unitshr 2.5 units/hr Sawing Sanding 0.8 units/hr Drilling 7 units/hr 0.8 units/hr bottleneck. ick to select your answer(s) and then click Check Answer Clear All remaining MacBook Air F10 20 OF3 F5 FI 8 9 2 3 4

Explanation / Answer

Since Drilling operation operates separately and simultaneously with Sawing and Sanding operation , we can assume this to be a subsystem with two sets of parallel processes :

Parallel process 1 : Sawing = 2.5 units/ hour   and    Sanding = 2.1 units/ hour

Parallel process 2 : Drilling = 7 units/ hour

The other processes and their corresponding processing time as follows :

Welding operation = 6 units/ hour

Effective capacity of the assembly operation ( since 3 products can be assembled simultaneously ) = 0.8 x 3 = 2.4 units/ hour

Out of above processes, it thus can be seen that Sanding operation has the lowest processing capacity in terms of number of units per hour @2.1 units / hour. Therefore SANDING operation is the bottleneck

SANDING IS THE BOTTLENECK

Throughput time of Sawing operation = 60 / 2.5 = 24 minutes per unit

Throughput time of Sanding operation = 60/ 2.1 = 28.57 minutes per unit

Throughput time of drilling operation = 60 / 7 = 8.57 minutes per unit

( Note: However since, Throughput time of Sawing operation + Throughput time of Sanding operation > Throughput time Drilling operation ,and these are two parallel sets of operations, throughput time of drilling operation does not have any effect on throughput time calculation of the whole system.)

Throughput time of welding operation = 60 / 5 = 12 minutes per unit

Throughput time of assembly operation = 60/ 2.4 =25 minutes per unit

Throughput time of the overall system

= Throughput time ( Sawing + Sanding + Drilling + Assembly )

= 24 + 28.57 + 12 + 25 minutes

= 89.57 minutes

THE BOTTLENECK TIME = 28.57 MINUTES PER UNIT

THROUGHPUT TIME = 89.57 MINUTES

Monthly available time = 60 minutes / hour x 9 hours/ day x 20 days/ month = 10800 minutes

Monthly capacity of the manufacturing process = 10800 minutes / Bottleneck time = 10800 / 28.57 = 378.01 ( 378 rounded to nearest whole number )

MONTHLY CAPACITY OF THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS = 378
