There are various management practices that should be avoided in order to create an atmosphere of trust and tolerance at the workplace. Some of these practices are as follows.
- Not hiring someone based on their religion, class, caste or gender. This should be avoided as it creates a feeling of hatred in the community and people should be hired solely on their merit.
- Allowing the creation of an atmosphere of stereotyping. This can be detrimental to the morale of certain employees who might not feel appreciated as they are always considered to be less than their colleagues.
- Not allowing people to bring religious symbology at the workplace. This could be asking muslim women to remove their scarf at work or sikh men to remove their turbans.
- Asking women to do overtime during their pregnancy and after rejoining to compensate for the lost work at the time of the birth of the child.
- Favouring close colleagues by sponsoring them to undertake new projects that would give them an edge over the others. They would thus also achieve financial gains through such opportunities.
- The employees should not be asked to maintain their physical appearance so that they can continue working for the company. Many women in jobs like being an air hostess or a receptionist are asked to maintain their looks. This creates an atmosphere that is lingering on the lines of workplace harassment.
- Not making the promotion criteria clear to all the employees at the workplace. Promotions, like hiring should also be based on merit and employees must be made aware of any job openings in higher divisions of the company.
