Explanation / Answer

Dear Sir,

Greetings.

On behalf of the students of culinary science department, UMASS, I would like to express gratitude for providing us with much needed assistance in form of guest lectures in two subjects where we have no regular faculty members. I would also like to draw you kind attention to the lack of internships and placement for our graduating students. Despite personal efforts, our students find it difficult get jobs. Last year only 30% of the students were placed, that too, through their own linkages.

The region has many food processing units, some of the best vacation resorts, business hotels, boutique gourmet units, food spas, speciality eateries and a couple of research institutes on culinary sciences. If approached in a systematic manner, I assume there is a huge opportunity waiting to be explored here.

We as students hardly get enough time for establish linkages and contacts with industry bodies, many of which don't even know that the university runs aprogram in culinary science. We get occasional help from the alumni, but it is not sufficient. I would like to suggest some strategic actions to enhance the future prospects of placement and internship of graduating students, as listed below.

1. Recruitment of a dedicated Placement Executive for the department. The existing placement cell is more focused on courses in Management and Engineering and is already overburdened. The placement excutive will be able to liaise with the industry and prospective employer in a better manner, creating opportunites of learnign and employment for us.

2. Conduction of regular guest lectures by industry professionals, entrepreneurs and managers. This will give us more recognition to our department among the industry members, enhancing our future prospects.

3. Establishing a comprehensive alumni connect. As of know, all such efforts are on individual basis. An official initiative of alumni management will be helpful to connect with alumni working with the industry and gain more recognition.

4. Providing training on industry readiness to make the students more employable by providing value added inputs and soft skills to succeed in the selection process.

I am sure that these steps would be much helpful in improving the placement performance of the department. I assure of any help from the student community of Department of Culinary Sciences.

Regards.
