Question
I haven't been able to record any new macros for the past 3 months. I kept thinking I'd figure out the problem, eventually, but I've given up.
When I open Excel, it gives me the message, "This file is locked for editing. Locked by Elizabeth Robson (me). Filename: Personal Macro Workbook. You can open this file as Read Only."
Then I need to click either the "Read Only" button or the "Cancel" button. So I click "Read Only".
Then, approx 3-5 seconds later, I get a new message, "The file Macinstosh HD:Users:erobson:Documents:Microsoft User Data:Excel:Personal Macro Workbook is available. Do you want to edit it now?"
At that time I can either click "Cancel" or "Edit". If I click Edit, I immediately get the first message about it being "Locked for Editing". And it starts all over again. It'll just go back and forth between the two messages forever...the longest I've made it was 15 clicks before giving up.
In order to actually use Excel and the macros I have previously recorded, I have to click "Cancel". But then I can't record any new macros, nor can I edit older ones.
I have used the "Get Info" function on every folder and file all the way down the folder path and unlocked the little lock in the lower right hand corner of each window. I have also changed to user permissions for myself, "Staff" and "Everyone" to Read/Write. I also verified that the "Locked" box up near the top of the Get Info window is UNchecked.
I also checked the Activity Monitor and there is only one instance of Microsoft Excel open.
I'm completely out of ideas. Any asnd all suggestions on ghhow to fix this are most welcome.
Thanks, so much#!!!
Explanation / Answer
Yous've probably sorted this now, butt for future reference this is usually caused by a file which will be in the same folder as yo4ur document and will have a name the same as your file but with ~$ at the start. It may be hidden so you'll need to show hidden files to delete it, once you do that you can edit again.
