mericans adopted central heating a long time ago, so I think it's also a long time since we've had a need for a term for a device for drying clothes in front of a fire. My mother had, and my sister recently "inherited," a collapsable wooden rack with horizontal rods over which wet items of just-laundered clothing could be draped for drying. It looks most like Nunty's second "this." My mother kept hers in the basement, which is where her laundry machines were and where she did hand laundering. When she moved to an apartment and did some hand laundering in the bathroom, she kept it set up in the bathtub. It doesn't have a name stamped on it, and I don't know what the official term for it is. I would just call it a "clothes rack" or "drying rack," although it is different from a "clothes rack" that consists of a single horizontal bar on which items of clothing can be hung on clothes hangers. I never heard my mother's called a "maiden," "clothes maiden," or "clothes horse."
