What is 'Security'? What is 'Privacy'?

Does the government or other agencies have the right to listen in on your telephone conversations or put software in your computer to see what you are doing or thinking?

Are you secure in your home, car or workplace from those who might want to know about your thinking, views or ideas?

With the threat of 9/11 and terrorists trying to distroy the country or lives, where do you draw the line for the 'security' and 'privacy' issues in the country?

Discuss and Define these issues.

Explanation / Answer

Security today in the software world means security through Obscurity. It aims to achieve control of a person's life by making him dependable on softwares which he cannot understand. Such a person effectively compromises his privacy by "trusting" corporate software vendors. The Trusted Computing Group (TCG) is an alliance of Microsoft, Intel, IBM, HP and AMD which promotes a standard for a `more secure' PC. Behind the covers, this standard makes things easier for these corporations to control the lives of software users. Whether "trusted computing" would aid in national security is an issue of debate. It is the belief of many that security should not be achieved by compromising privacy.
