5. Mr. Wannabe of Eco Friendly Design has just found out that their main competitor, Friendly Ecosystem Design, has moved in next door on the wall adjacent to the patio. He was thrilled with the network installation you proposed and has contacted you to add a security system to monitor Eco Friendly Design’s patio. The new security system incorporates many remote video cameras (you do not have to place them). Live video feeds can be provided to any networked PC running security application software.

Your customer is concerned that the new security system will slow down his normal business operations, so he wants you to investigate upgrading the network to Gigabit Ethernet while minimizing the changes to his existing network. His concern is cost and “down time” with this installation.

While answering the questions below, make any necessary assumptions about your client’s network and be sure to state those assumptions.
a. Do you recommend using UTP or fiber? Why?

b. Exactly which Ethernet do you recommend? (1000BaseT, 1000BaseCX, 1000BaseSX, or 1000BaseLX)

c. What equipment must be upgraded? (Consider the equipment room, the cabling and the work areas.)

Explanation / Answer

A. Since cost and downtime are both considerations for the customer, UTP is recommended. Fiber installations are both costly, and take longer to install due to inherent difficulties in fiber splicing. B. 1000BaseT is suggested. 1000BaseCX can only be used for short distances (< 25 Meters), and CX/LX are Fiberoptic standards, which we ruled out in section A. C. Depending on what the existing installation had in place, the cabling will need to be upgraded to Cat5E, the network "closet" will need routers/switches other infrastructure devices upgraded to handle Gigabit traffic, and if Mr. Wannabe wants gigabit speed connections to each host on the site, every network attached computer will need to be inspected to see if the Network Interface Card supports gigabit connections. To minimize downtime, all of these upgrades could be done outside of normal working hours. Depending on the layout of the building, the installation of the cabling would likely be the most time consuming part of this upgrade.
