Most often simulations are not used in management studies as it is time-consuming, takes significant effort and puts demands on students and teachers. Web-based simulations also require teachers to relinquish control of the learning process and can lead to unexpected directions and conclusions, outside of teacher's control.

how effective do you think web-based simulations are in developing student’s critical thinking skills? How should teachers best prepare in order to maximize learning from a web-based simulation in a management course?

B) What do you see as the value of assessment learning outcomes in comparison to some of the traditional assessment techniques described in Tools for Teaching

Explanation / Answer

Web-based simulations are excellent tools for developing the critical thinking activities of learners. The only point is these simulations should be done in the presence of a facilitator. The guidance of a facilitator is a must. This would help learners proceed in the right direction. If there is some course correction required, the facilitator can help with that. The learnings can be tested at the end of the simulation by asking the right questions. The experience of the facilitator is of utmost importance.

B) Assessment of learning outcomes is much better than other techniques. At the beginning of the course, the learning outcomes are mentioned very clearly. Against each learning outcome, the learners must be assessed. This would clearly identify people who haven't learnt and the others who have learnt most of the things. It can also me used as a measure of teaching effectiveness.
