Question
Philip Morris Companies reported testing a microelectronic cigarette holder that eliminates all smoke except that inhaled by the smoker. Cost is approximately $50 per unit and cost $200 million to develop. Device name is the Accord. 90% of second hand smoke will be eliminated. It comes with a rechargeable battery. It takes 30-min to charge the battery. Supporters of this produce say it will be welcomed by smokers who currently refrain from smoking inside homes or cars for the sake of non smoking family members Critics claim that the Accord will simply reinforce addiction to cigarettes. Children might be encouraged to smoke because the Accord would enable them to hide smoking from their parents. Philip Morris claims the device has a locking device for parents. Imagine that it is several years ago and you have just received your engineering degree. You are searching for your first job and Philip Morris interviews you about a position in the research department of the Accord. Would you have any reservations about accepting such a position? If you have some reservations would that fact that this job pays $10,000 more a year than any other offer have convinced you to take the Philip Morris offer?Explanation / Answer
Assuming that several years ago have achieved my degree, I don’t think I would accept the offer from Philip morris. Ther are many negative aspects to it,
*Even though the company is trying to make a micro electronic cigarette, not sure it is going to be a hit. It may be welcomed by the smokers but this may not be bought by all the smoker. So, the percentage of product becoming a hit is very less
* This may attract students a lot. It helps them to hide smoking from their parents.
* Once the product is introduced there are chances that public might oppose this product since it has a lot negative aspect than benefits
* When there is a danger of product not becoming a hit, the job can be also in danger. Over a period of time I do not see job security.
Having so many drawbacks I do not see that for a fresher like me, this is not a right place to start the career.
