Mattress recycling reveals various raw materials to be used in other industries. Out of these, metal and wood are two most profitable raw materials. Remaining plastic, foam and bed coils are more problematic due to the difficulties in economies of scale.
QUESTION 1
The main question for this assignment is to find industries that utilize these three raw materials, calculating the cost/profit measures for each alternative.
2.Another issue is the residue filling material from the mattress recycling. Can you think of other alternatives where this can be used as a raw material?
To achieve this,
3.Conduct a literature review for reverse logistics operations that involve mattress recycling or any product with similar characteritics (minimum five journal articles are required). Summarize your findings citing these articles.
4.Find out more about industries that are in US that use one/some/all these materials in their production lines.
5.Utilize the methodologies we have covered in the class (grid systems, transportation modeling etc.) to conduct a cost/profit analysis.
Make sure your assignment does not exceed 8 pages including the bibliography.

1.The main question for this assignment is to find industries that utilize these three raw materials, calculating the cost/profit measures for each alternative.
Now we clearly see the materials that can be extracted are Metal, Wood, Plastic, foam, bed coils and cloth.
Recycled plastic is heavily used by packaging industry to create packaging material. Furniture industry also needs a lot of recycled plastic. Also companies making plastic stuff like hangers, trays, toys etc.
Reprocessed Foam has lesser usage but still some would be like filling in the toys, filling in car, bike seats, making water wipers, mops for household and industrial usage etc.
Bed coils cannot be used directly. Since they are also made up of metal, they can be melted and reshaped and the used by multiple industries such as construction industry, automobile industry, metal artifacts etc.
Cost/profit measures for Park City would include cost to extract the material, cleanse and process the material. Profits or sales would be the revenues generated by selling the processed material to the needful industries.
2.Another issue is the residue filling material from the mattress recycling. Can you think of other alternatives where this can be used as a raw material?
Residue filling material can be used for fillings (after treatment) in soft toys, vehicle seats, furniture etc
3.Conduct a literature review for reverse logistics operations that involve mattress recycling or any product with similar characteristics (minimum five journal articles are required). Summarize your findings citing these articles.
Reverse logistics is kind of the first mile of operation in the recycling industry. Since the sources would be many and widely dispersed, it becomes a very costly affair to collect the discarded mattresses from their sources. Once they are collected and brought to the processing facility, the costs are miniscule. Hence key emphasis needs to be put aided with vehicle routing solutions in order to optimize the cost of material pickup.
