Question
The Car-Computer Analogy
I---When the automobile was first patented in the early twentieth century it was hailed as one of the most transformative innovations to date. The affordances of a vehicle that could provide speedy transportation to individuals over fairly long distances was nothing short of miraculous. Despite all the obvious advantages, automotive engineers never dreamed of some of the negative consequences that eventually resulted from an entire nation taken to the road. Such negative consequences included air pollution, traffic accidents, traffic mortalities, and DUIs. Changes in where we live, how we live, and how we play were also some of the unanticipated consequences of this transformative invention. Automobiles transformed urban living by fostering the growth of suburbs and contributed to the decline of once thriving urban city centers.
In this discussion, I would like you to examine what you might deem to be some of the unanticipated consequences of the rise of the personal computer (including personal mobile devices). Think about how the computing technology has changed our lives for the better, and in some cases perhaps, for the worse. How has it affected our health (both mental and physical), the way we communicate, the way we do business, entertain ourselves, and get educated ?
Answers will show originality, depth of thought, and evidence of critical analysis and thinking with respect to issues presented
Explanation / Answer
First of all I would linke to explain that Computers have changed the world in many ways. They allow huge amounts of information to be stored in a small space. They also allow a person to calculate mathematical problems with ease. Finally, computers allow people to communicate with one another through internet sites such as Facebook, My Space, and Twitter. Personal computers today can hold up to n number of gigabytes of memory. They can be used to store music, pictures, documents, videos, and much more. Computers are able to be reprogrammed to suit any user's needs. This is one of the key traits of a computer today.Computers were first designed to help a person calculate numbers; this function can be seen as far back as 2000 B.C. with the use of the abacus. Modern computers are simply very advanced calculators. Almost any mathematical function can be plugged into a computer, and the computer will solve almost instantaneously. The use of a computer as a calculating device takes away the monotonous task of calculating by brute force.
Finally, computers have changed the way that we communicate as a society. People can now talk to one another in almost no time at all through the use of social networking sites, and people can even live video chat with applications such as Skype. Imagine, if this idea had been presented to scientist 50 years ago, the presenter would have been laughed out of the conversation.
In my perspective excessive usage and dependency on PCs/mobile phones have more benefits than any negatives but it has obvious disadvantages related to mental and physical health as people use mobiles/pcs for everything like they have left reading newspapers and reading news only on internet/social media affecting certain eye sight with LED/LCD display and excessive usage of same has affects on your memory/brain like earlier everything used to be memorized but now for everything PC/mobiles are to be used.
One more obvious issue with health is Games as nowdays people are playing games on mobiles/pcs instead of playing in real out so it definately affect our physical/mental growth.
