Question
Paul Anderson focuses intently on audience. That is, he wants you to dictate your writing styles, strategies, methods, processes, etc. predicated on who your reader is going to be. The key is to focus on your audience’s needs in relation to your purposes.
Think of a time when you (or someone you know) had to address a specific audience, whether in writing or speech, and you succeeded admirably. How did you tailor your rhetoric to that particular audience? What adjustments were necessary to inform, persuade, make your text or speech useful, etc.? Why do you believe your writing or speech was successful?
Conversely, think of a time when you (or someone you know) failed admirably at addressing a specific audience. What went wrong? How did you fail to tailor your rhetoric? What adjustments would have been beneficial? Overall, why do you believe your writing or speech failed?
Explanation / Answer
I had to deliver a speech in front of the employees on the benefits of employee wellness programs in workplace. I had to deliver my speech to a specific audience of employees in our company and had to cover all the benefits with examples within one hour. I prepared well for the speech covering all the purpose of the speech. The speech went fruitful as enough planning helped me to cover all the points within the time frame and also I could engage the audience involvement by asking few questions on the topic and addressing their queries. I tailored my speech with examples of other organizations who has successfully implemented wellness programs in workplace that helped to reduce the stress to a great extend. I made adjustment to my speech through audience involvement by encouraging them to share their views and asking questions. I find my speech to be successful as the audience was satisfied with the entire speech and they understood the benefit of the wellness program. The result of my speech was clear in the highest enrollment of employees for the wellness program on the next day.
I have attended an official function where I had to deliver a speech on employee concerns over the recent employee layoff in many organizations. I was not prepared for the speech and as it was tight schedule I had to cover my speech in less time. I started explaining the importance of employees to an organization and by the time I moved onto the layoff issues it was late and I had to conclude my speech without explaining the employee concerns as we had to move onto our next session. The purpose of the speech was not covered here and the speech was a failure. I failed to tailor my rhetoric due to inadequate planning while addressing the specific audience and purpose of the speech which resulted into insufficient time. I could have restricted myself while giving introduction to one or two lines and start addressing the purpose of the speech. I find the speech as a failure as my speech does not cover the purpose and the time was not utilized effectively to address the purpose. The audience also was not satisfied with my speech.
