ICANN plays a unique role in the architecture of the internet. ICANN has recently been transferred out of US control to an international committee. ICANN performs the actual technical maintenance work of the Central Internet Address pools and DNS root zone registries pursuant to the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) function contract.It helps to define how the domain name system functions and expands.It doesn’t control content on the Internet and cannot stop spam and it doesn’t deal with access to the Internet. But through its coordination role of the Internet’s naming system, it does have an important impact on the expansion and evolution of the Internet.
