Question
Can someone help me with this question and please show all steps in solution. Also can someone work this problem out on MATLAB like what would the code be? Thank you
5. Burning one gallon of gasoline in your car produces 19.4 pounds of CO2 Calculate the amount of Co emitted during a year for the following vehicles, assuming they all travel 12,000 miles per year. If the average price of gas is $3.50 gallon, calculate the gas cost for each vehicle. Be sure to show all steps in your solution! The reported fuel-efficiency numbers are: 2010 Smart Car Fortwg 37 mpg 2010 Civic Coupe 29 mpg 2010 Civic Hybrid 43 mpg 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt 31 mpg 2010 Toyota Prius (Hybrid) 48 mpg 2010 Toyota Yaris 32 mpg 2010 VW Jetta Diesel 42 mpgExplanation / Answer
mpg is an acronym for miles per second, which means how many miles your car can run with one gallon of petrol /diesel / gas.
According to data,
one gallon of gasoline produces 19.4 pounds of CO2
total distance travelled during an year = 12000 miles
Let us take exampe of Smart Car Fortwo
37 mpg
It travels 37 miles for one gallon
we will apply simple unitary method:
37 miles = one gallon
12,000 miles = (1 / 37) * 12000 = 324.324 gallons
The car would need 324.324 gallons to run 12,000 miles.
one gallon produces 19.4 pounds of CO2
324.324 gallons would produce 19.4 * 324.32 = 6,291.89 pounds CO2
To estimate the cost, again unitary method:
one gallon = $3.50
324.324 gallon = $3.50 * 324.324 = $1,135.12
We can derive a simple formula so as to write the matlab code:
Pounds of CO2 = (12000 / mpg of car) * 19.4
Cost = $3.50 * (12000 / mpg of car)
By using same procedure, the data for other cars can be manually calculated, adn you can cross checkusing matlab code.
Now let's see the matlab code:
// store the values in a list which is basically a 1X1 array
mpg_of_car = [37 29 43 31 48 32 42]
// the dot in "./" would perform this equation for each array value in order
pounds_of_CO2 = (12000 ./ mpg_of_car) * 19.4
Cost = 3.50 * (12000 ./ mpg_of_car)
Final code:
mpg_of_car = [37 29 43 31 48 32 42]
pounds_of_CO2 = (12000 ./ mpg_of_car) * 19.4
Cost = 3.50 * (12000 ./ mpg_of_car)
Result:
Hope it helps:)
