Individual and professional ethics within the field of workplace safety management is a critical issue. Your boss receives an annual bonus for workplace safety performance. If your facility improves your injury rate by 10% your boss will gain a bonus of $3,000. Unfortunately, your division within the corporation fell short by a fraction of a percent and experienced an injury rate improvement of 9.8% which disqualifies your boss from receiving the annual safety bonus. She approaches you and requests that you “recalculate” your numbers to ensure a 10% improvement in injury rate. Describe and substantiate the response that you would give to your boss.
Explanation / Answer
Injury Rates in organization is mainly monitored by OHSAS (Operational Health and Safety Assessment Series). We should never manipulate the actual findings as it'll affect the company's reputation in the market. We should strictly adhere to company's principles and policies.
I will recalculate the numbers and will provide the correct numbers to my boss.
It is individual's responsibility to work as a team and maintain a ethical environment to thrive in. So it si my sole resposnsibility to prevent any possible unethical behaviours by anyone in the organization. Ethics are not taught, they are earned.
