Question
Please, watch a video from TedTalk, "TEDxSydney - Nigel Marsh - Work Life Balance is an Ongoing Battle", and write a journal!
First part of the assignment:
What is the biggest thing from the video that you agree with and is there anything that you don't agree with?
Did your parents, grandparents, guardians, role models in life do a good job at modeling work-life balance for you?
Are you already "out of balance" or are there warning signs to becoming "out of balance". What should you do (if anything)?
Did you have any "ah ha" moments while watching the video, reading the article or listening to the podcast?
Second part of the assignment:
Think about: The lack of balance in our work-school-life (whichever apply to you) can be an issue. Identify all the items on this list that apply to you currently (you do not have to share this list with class). Just identify for yourself.
Write about: If you have stress in your life, what is one thing you can do starting now to become more balanced in work-school-life (whatever applies to you). Remember what Nigel said in the video, it doesn't have to be a major change to make a difference.
Write about: If you are not a particularly stressed person, what strategies do you use that you would suggest to other people (that is legal).
Write about: When you start your new career (or promotion) for what you are going to school for, what are going to be the new challenges you will have for work-life balance and what boundaries are you going to have to set?
Explanation / Answer
In this video he talks about how he works so hard before his 40 age. He totally neglected family and friends before that. Then he realises and take 1 year gap to live with his wife and family. He spent 7 years to study the work life balance issue. He said some kind of job and career choice bring fundamental imbalance in your life in young family. The best way to come out is to acknowledging the reality of the situation. I totally agree with his saying. Sometimes we involve yourself in work so much that we do not understand how far we are going from our family. As in my view money is not the overall objective. But to keep family happy is the ultimate objective. No at least I can say for sure that no one help me in to create job life balance. No one took this for me. I keep on doing work to fulfil my necessity. Yes i am in becoming “out of balance” stage. For this through this video I decide to bring work life balance by creating my own boundaries and limits. Focus more on my life style. Yes, when he said “There are other parts to life … there’s the intellectual side, there’s the emotional side, there’s the spiritual side … and to be balanced, I believe we have to attend to all of those areas, not just those 50 stomach crunches”. Things that apply to me as he said “If you don’t design your life, someone else will design it for you and you just might not like their idea of balance”. I decide to set boundaries and work accordingly to bring balance in my life. I do not bring work tension or office problem at home. When I come to home I become home taker not a manger. As married women I need to bring balance in my in laws relation with me and my husband time with me. So this is the biggest challenge to manage the home along with your relations. i decide to work where I have certain specific task to perfrm with proper timing.
