Factors affecting communication in international business:
One of the factors that can impact the communication in international business is gender. This is because communication between members of different cultures is affected by how the role of men & women is viewed by different societies. For example w can take gulf countries like Saudi Arabia where people generally cover themselves & would travel only with men. This kind of approach makes women in Saudi Arabia more protected & honored. Hence in these countries we find males to be more dominating than women & they seem to communicate more compared to female population.
This is another important factor. This is considered to be a generation gap when people of different age groups interact with one another. For example, when we take countries like china, Thailand, Cambodia they give greater weight age to the decisions of the elders when making important decisions whereas if we take countries like US, they are less mindful to elders & less likely to take their advice in making important decisions.
Solutions for miscommunication:
We can hire professionals from countries where the business has been targeted who are not only aware of their country’s language but also know the needs of their area which can help in avoiding cultural missteps.
We can have the website translated to local language by using services of google translate which helps in rolling the websites in different languages to keep the costs under control.
Emails can’t replace face to face communication. Frequent meetings with the teams with whom we are doing business can help in smooth workflow. Similarly, video conferences, google hangout also contribute to healthy corporate culture.
There is no requirement for video call or face to face char frequently. Rather a slack offers a great solution. This can help in bringing the team closer together.
Providing services to the customers in their local language can create a feeling of closeness through phone or email or chat. Customers really appreciate this & also help in building close relationships with the customers.
