Question

Mielvil MWSG Network Consulting Congratulations!!! You have just been hired on as a Network Specialist by MWSG Network Consulting The clients of Melville's Coffee Café are reporting that they are having a tough time connecting to the public Wi-Fi network at the shop. You are sent by MWSG Network Consulting to fix the problem. Based on a similar problem you have seen before at school, you suspect that there may be an issue with association frames. You decide to take an AirPCap dongle and laptop when you get there you find you have trouble receiving data packets. running Wireshark to the Café, but 1. What do you now suspect the problem is? Why? 2. How do you confirm your new suspicions? You request that the Café owner asks their kitchen staff to shut down any machines they are using customer seated there, having an iced tea after a so you assume, as they are wearing a sweaty tank top, sym shorts and muddy shoes). 3. The problem persists. You visit nearby businesses with WLANs, but they trouble. You return to the Café to find only one long run (or The seem to be having no problem is still present, so you begin to wonder if it is possible for this kind of problem to come from outside the Café? Is it? Explain your answer You look out of the window and notice that there's been a car idling in the parking lot since you arrived to diagnose the problem. You decide to see if anybody in the car has noticed anything. As you walk outside the door and head towards the car, the driver sees you and suddenly speeds The interference abruptly stops. What was probably happening here? 4. away All is ok now at the coffee shop. The manager asksif anything can be done to prevent this from happening in the future. What do you tell her? 5.

Explanation / Answer

1. The reason for which wireshark is not able to capture any data packet could be that someone is sniffing in the wifi or might be hacked the wifi (to use it according to their own will). There is also a second possibility that there is a VPN installed and therefore wireshark is not able to pick any data packets. However second option doesnt seems to be the posssible case for this scenario.

2. Now to confirm my suspicions i will try to detect whether someone is sniffing in the network. Any intrusion can be detected in wireshark through "Expert Info's" (kind of log of anomalies detected by Wireshark in capture file). Each expert info has 4 segements

a. CHAT - information about usual workflow

b. NOTE - notable things

c.WARN- warning

d. ERROR - serious problem

Now intrusion can be detected in "CHAT". any TCP connection should contain sequence of SYN, SYN+ACK and ACK messages. If there is only SYN in chat that means there is an intrusion.

3. Yes this kind of problem can occur from outside of the cafe because for intrusion to take place, a device should be in the reach of signals. Since it is a wifi, it can easily reach outside of cafe and therefore any can hack the network by connecting with the wifi.

4. The person who was sitting in the car was the culprit as he was succesfully able to intrude in the network sitting outside where signals were present. He hakced the network and gained the access of Wifi.

5. I will tell her that she needs more protection for their wifi to prevent this from happening. Immediate measures can be

a. Strong passwork combination (bith wifi' password and administrator password for WIFI)

b. Enable network encryption

c. Disable remote access.

d. Having a good firewall and keeping the routers software up to date.
