if we contact another person in the internet you haqve to type an address into your computer(name or a number)That address should be unique so that the computers can know where can easily find each other. ICANN it coordinates these unique identifiers across the world.
Simply we have to say in one word answer is this To coordinate the administration of the Internet’s systems of unique identifiers like domain names, Internet protocol addresses, and protocol ports and parameters numbers.

It doesn't the control the content the of internet and It doesnot stop spam and it doesn’t deal with access to the Internet. But it coordination role of the Internet naming system.

The role of ICAAN is a follows:
To see the big and complex interconnected network of unique connections that allow computers on the Internet to find one another.
We can call it as universal resolvability.it means where you on the network we will get equal and same predictable results when you access the network.
