Question
Consider the following situation and indicate whether you would use frame relay, ATM, MPLS, or Carrier Ethernet services. Assume that the facilities are available and “competitively” priced. For the following situation, determine which services could be used to satisfy the functional requirements of the application. For this situation, select the service(s) you would recommend and explain the reasons for your choice.

a. You have a large number of locations in a metropolitan area. At each location there is a large number of real-time data transactions processed. Information about the transactions must be sent independently and more or less randomly among locations. That is, the transaction are not batched or do not occur in bunches. Performance requirements are such that the delay must be short. Volumes at each location are modest but in the range of up to a few Mbps in total.
Explanation / Answer
For the scenario, though the frame relay and MPLS would work. I would suggest MPLS because it is efficient in sending the data to the multiple locations independently as it has the concept of tagging the data with the labels. With the help of the labels, the data can be sent to different locations independently. MPLS also satisfies the performance requirement with efficient speed in the delivery of the data to the destinations almost with no delays with the help of the traffic engineering concept. However, the cost can be competitive.
Frame Relay is also packed switched like MPLS. It can also be used for the scenario. However, it may not be as effective as MPLS with respect to the multiple locations as there will be a central location through which the data will be transferred to different locations which may consume the bandwidth. There could be shorter delays. In this also variable length data can be sent.
ATM is out of scope as it has fixed length data cells and it is circuit switched network.
