I have a question from my Biology 1 class. We are supposed to workas a group on this and I was told I could ask whoever I wantedso…why not ask here! I have been doing research but I have noclue if I am on the right track. Here is the question:

“Chantal goes to Andrea’s party but forgets to take herinsulin – she is a Type 1 diabetic. Her blood sugar rises to3 times normal, but her cells are starving. What is happening inher body? Also name and explain the membrane transport process forthis situation and how it applies.

Insulin is a horomone that allows glucose to flow up itsconcentration gradient. Glucose can passively diffuse acrossthe membrane but the cells need a higher amount so it needs atransporter to move it against its gradient. In diabetes type1 your body makes none or very little insuling, not enough tosupport the body. So your blood glucose would rise becausethe cells are not able to take in the glucose because the insulincan not stimulate the glucose transporter GLUT2. This allowsglucose to be actively transported into the cell against itsconcentration gradient. Good Luck Good Luck
