Order-of-magnitude problems. [12 points: 4 points each] Answer the following questions to within an order of magnitude. You shouldn't need to do any complicated calculations - in each case I'm looking for a few-line argument (some combination of words and equations) followed by plugging in some numbers. How large of a magnetic field would be required to qualitatively change the structure of an atom? (For example, to change the ionization energy of hydrogen by DeltaE1/E1 of order unity?) An charged particle released at finite velocity into a uniform magnetic field undergoes a spiraling motion around the direction of the field. The frequency of this motion is called the cyclotron frequency. Estimate this frequency for an electron in the Earth's magnetic field. The magnetic field in the Milky Way Galaxy has a typical strength of 6 muG and is oriented parallel to the plane of the galaxy (roughly along the spiral arms). Given the radius of the galaxy of roughly 30,000 light-years, estimate the current that is required to generate the field.Explanation / Answer
