(a) Looking through the lens of an organization’s manager or leader, do ICTs hinder or inhibit emotional intelligence?
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) refers to convergence of telecommunication networks with computers, internet and other digital media used in almost every modern organization. While there is no doubt about the importance of ICT in modern business, an often overlooked aspect of it is it's effect on humans, particularly emotional intelligence. Unfortunately ICT has contributed to a decline in the quality of communication in the workplace. By burying themselves in their screens, it's becoming increasingly difficult for employees to be aware of their external surroundings or inner emotions. As the brain can only focus on one thing at a time, overall quality of communication declines. It's difficult to pick up on emotional nuances of a conversation if one is talking, texting and e-mailing at the same time. There is a strong correlation between high use of ICT and lower emotional intelligence.
Self regulation, the ability to stay focused and alert, is probably the one aspect of emotional intelligence that is affected most by technology. ICT also follows employees to their homes, resulting in deteriorating relationships and decreased emotional awareness. The obsession with being 'always on' adversely affects emotional intelligence. Imagine this scenario - It's lunch time in an office. There are four co workers sitting at one table, all of them glued to their phones. None of them having a real conversation. It's a common scenario, right? Now imagine a table next to them where another four co workers are sitting, talking to each other, laughing, discussing. Which group do you think, will be in a more pleasant mood after the lunch break? That's the effect ICT has on emotional intelligence.
(b) What impact do ICTs have on global organizations?
ICTs have indispensable in today's global organizations. As far as coordination and intercommunication between global offices of an organization is concerned, it certainly has a positive impact in the form of cost reduction and ease of communication. It impacts the nature of jobs, viability of business models and the structure of economies. New jobs, businesses and sectors have been created, some have been modified or enhanced and some have become irrelevant. It has made the global organizations flatter and leaner.
(c) How can leaders and managers ensure that ICTs do not remove the human from organizational communication?
Digital communication in the workplace is here to stay, so leaders must work to ensure that ICTs do not overshadow the human aspect of communication. Emotional Intelligence workshops can help teams better understand themselves and their co workers. Leaders who make a point to pick up the phone or walk into a colleague’s office will set an example for staff to limit digital messaging to simple, non-emotional issues. A simple awareness that our emotional intelligence is affected by our reliance on digital communication is a first step in improving the workplace. Good leaders must be self aware and understand how their verbal and non-verbal communication can affect the team. Official communication after working hours should be avoided. Team building exercises are an effective way of creating a bond between employees and managers.
