In the 1980s, the federal government required drug testing from government contractors. Since then, a number of companies have adopted policies regarding drug testing in the workplace. Companies believe they need to do drug testing to promote a safe and efficient work environment. Others believe it is an invasion of privacy and what a person does at home should have no bearing on employment. Write a paper addressing the following questions: Do you think that companies should perform drug testing on employees? Explain your rationale and provide specific examples, where applicable. Is the safety of employees and overall efficiency of the company or the privacy rights of employees more important? Explain your decision. If you think drug testing of employees is appropriate, what human resource policies would you put in place to govern the drug testing? Explain. If you do not think that drug testing is appropriate, what obligations do companies have to make sure proper safety is maintained in the workplace? Explanation / Answer
According my point of view companies should perform drug testing on employees. Drug testing will helps to enhance the employee’s health and also the safety. Company was paying salaries and employees will expect healthy environment in the workplace. If any employee consumes the drug then he/she will definitely influence the other employees that which lead to organizational failure. Consumed employee cannot do their work properly because there will be no mental stability to do the work. For example there was an employee that who delivers products to the customers and that employee was a drug addicted person. Company doesn’t know about the employee status and send him to deliver the products to the customers. Unknowingly a small dispute arises between the employee and customer. That dispute leads to lose the employee metal ability and injure the customer. This kind of situation leads to down fall of the companies name and fame. So, company should conduct the drug test to the employees.
It was important check the employee safety because it will be leads to the loss of company productivity. From the employer point of view it was a correct decision to make drug test but employee will feel that company was spoiling their privacy. Both of them are correct but according to me company was paying more and more salaries to the employees and employees should obey each and every rules of the company policy.
Human resource policies are the set of guidelines that which helps to create a healthy environment in the organization. Drug testing of employees is appropriate in the organization. Everything must be mentioned in the hand book that which should be given to the employee. Drug testing comes under the safety and conduct policies of human resources. From dress code to sexual harassment comes under these policies.
