Explanation / Answer

- Personas or user personas are a useful tool in product design and development. They are the theoretical model of expected real life users. For example, a medical device such as X-ray machine may require a persona of a radiologist. This persona will include his/her characteristics, demographics, preferences, behaviors and other attributes.

Personas are based on what the marketers or designers see as the potential users. By creating these personas, the development team can create user experience and interfaces that will be most suitable for their target category. This helps in making the product as user friendly as possible and reduce the risk of product failure due to poor user experience.

- From searching online record I have found that there are several companies that manufacture medical devices and they use persona for their UX design. One such example is Starfish Medical. In their article labelled “The user experience (UX) design process for medical devices: research” the author Kimberly Nguyen mentions that the organization uses personas to create and prepare scenarios and assess the fitment. This process result in to the creation of overall product requirement.

- My recommendation to the team about using personas in the project is that with medical devices we have a higher degree of responsibility. Thus it is important to choose the right personas for design and development purpose. While other industries may spend X amount of time in developing the user personas, as a medical industry we need to spend 2X time to develop the personas. If their project allows such timeline, then we could make real differences in the project.
