Question
Imagine that you are in a debate with someone who asserts that, just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, art is whatever the spectator thinks it is; there are no rules, no criteria, no universal boundaries delineating what is and what is not art, who is and who is not an artist. If something expresses or creates an aesthetic or emotional response, it is art.
Your task is to take the other side of the debate: How would you respond to and rebut this view? In the first chapter of Living with Art, Getlein lists six roles that artists fulfill; these may help you in coming up with your response. Come up with points and specific examples of art works to support of the other side of the debate, which is that not just anything can be art, not just anyone can be an artist: There are established and justifiable criteria to confer that status upon objects and individuals.
Explanation / Answer
The idea of art is not whatever spectator belives it to be. Art does have rules, criteria, boundaries, difference between who is an artist or not, and doesnot always express aesthetic and emotional response. In fact there are six roles that not just anyone but only artist can fulfill and that is 1. artist create places for some human purpose.2 create extraordinary version of ordinary objects. 3. record and commemorate 4. to give tangiable form to the unknown. 5. give tangible form to feeling and ideas. 6. refresh our vision and help us see the world in new ways. these six roles are rules and criteria that sets boundaries of what art is and what art is not. If spectator thinks anything can be art than he is completly worong. Getlein reminds readers that "just as a neolithic veesel we looked at earlier is more than a ordinary drinking cup, so the textile here is more than a ordinary garments. An ordinary drinking cup cannot be perscived as art, in this case shows that what is more than just a drinking cup but name, history, and symbolism ,this is art. figure 1.8 indicates that manohar, jahangir who receives a cup from khusrau .1605-06. therefor not just anything can be a art.
