Question
Assume that as a result of HR planning, a mental hospital identifies a shortage of therapists but a surplus of case workers. Discuss the actions that you would take to address these problems, and explain why they must be approached carefully.
In your response, you should think about various problematic areas and situations. Also, you should make a few suggestions and/or recommendations. Please pay particular attention to possible legal ramifications for various decisions that might be involved in this process (note: although this is only basic HRM course, you will still need to think about the legal side of the decision-making process). Many of the legal cases involving HR matters occur due to the lack of consideration and careful decision making on the part of HR personnel.
Explanation / Answer
Actions:
1 Equally assigning half of the case workers to assist each therapists. (Dividing case workers equally within therapists)
2. The rest other half to be assigned for the paper work-transcripting works.
3. Hiring for short terms few therapists.
Recommendaions:
1. Instead of devolving the responsibilities, a fresh report to be made of the problem:
- Current number of patients in the hospital
- Number of therapists and case workers required for each patient
- Reasons for the sudden surplus of case workers felt.
2. A temporary hiring of the independent therapists at the time of emergency:
- A constant updatation of the contacts of independent therapists in the surrounding area/city with whom certain talks should be done beforhand if hospital requires them at the time of emergency.
3. Transferring case workers to the independent therapists for temporary allocation of resources and charging the independent/other hospitals for that while keeping the case workers within our contract. Salary to be given from both the sides to such workers. (Lot of legal issues)
4. Surplus case workers can be sent to Training purposes. So that in future few skilled and efficient case workers can handle work of many less case workers.
5. Interning few medical students as assistants to therapists. So that their work can be reduced and that the therapists can have time and efficiency for looking over the other patients. (Remembering: Interns come with no big contracts-legal issues)
