Explanation / Answer
1. The three styles of assertive communication that is most important to communicate more assertively are:
- clearly stating the needs and wants- The communicator should be clear himself about what he requires and put in in clear and proper words to others. Needs and wants describes the outcome required from the employees through the work given to them. To get the work done properly it needs to be communicated assertively.
- Showing respect for others while communicating- Even if the person with whom the communication is being made may be on a lesser position, due respect should be given to him while communicating the message. Unethical ways or abusive words shouldnt be included in the communication.
- Listening without interruption- When a communication is made, it should be two way. After giving our message we should have the patience to listen to the other person and not interrupt him during that process as that is the way he can clear his doubts if any and we can be sure that the message we conveyed as been understood properly.
2. The five types of conflict response styles are:
Accomodating- In this style the person cooperates to the other's views and finishes the conflict. In this process he may deviate from his goals and vary the outcomes he requires.
Avoiding- This is done by simply finishing the issue without coming to any conclusion. This can be done if there is less chance of getting our point accepted and the other party's point is not acceptable by us.
Collaborating- This means finding a way to jointly agree to both the parties points and work on them as a group collaborately.
Competeting- This style is when one works according to his style without considering the other party's veiwpoint and focussing on own goals which can even be on the cost of others goals.
Compromising- This is the style in which none of the parties achive their goals. It can be termed as a lose-lose position.
3. Contentious tactics are the way of resolving a conflict in your own way without evaluating the outcomes they are going to put on the minds and behaviours of others. The types of contentious tactics are shaming and threats, returning fire for fire, silence, ingratiation, promises, logic. Though this style looks a negative approach but it is not always destructive. Sometimes if followed with a diplomatic and proper style it can bring positive results too. For example, ingratiation makes the party favourable towards their thoughts.
