Explanation / Answer
Productivity and motivation are crucial aspects that have to be considered in all organizations, including the police departments. Law enforcement is not an easy job, and therefore, keeping productivity levels high can improve and enhance security and safety of the people (yung-hyun yu, 2009). As a police chief, I would develop several techniques and strategies aimed at improving their productivity.
Firstly, I would ensure that the police officers are provided with the necessary basic needs. Abraham Maslow developed the hierarchy of needs, which starts with food, clothing, and shelter. On this note, I would ensure that we offer accommodation and that the necessary food items are allocated to them.
Secondly, I would also hold meetings for recognition and praise for good work done. When the rates of pay are highly competitive, praise and recognition have proved to be a strong motivator. Therefore, I would ensure that I hold special recognition and praise for the hard working officers as this will increase the productivity levels.
Fitness and health are also important aspects that need to be considered. Health issues have sometimes forced police officers to be absent from duty. Setting up gym areas in or around our office departments can go a long way in ensuring that the health of my police officers is enhanced. Recent research and studies have proved that fitness and health are critical aspects that have to be considered in reducing absenteeism and increasing productivity.
