Chapter 4 OPENING CAS E Nick Carson recently became project manager of a critical biotech ente Silicon Valley company. This project involved creating the hardware and a next generation (next-gen) DNA-sequencing instrument used in assembling and an lyzing the human genome. Several companies were competing to build smaller, faster sequencing instruments that would reduce the costs and improve the quality of data analysis in this rapidly changing field. The biotech projeet was the company's largest endeavor, and it had tremendous potential for future growth and revenue rprise at hi softwar e for 138 Unfortunately, there were problems managing this large project. It had been under way for three years and had already gone through three different project managers. Nick ad been the lead software developer on the project before top management made him the project manager. The CEO told him to do whatever it took to deliver the first versio of the product in four months and a production a potential corporate buyout with a larger company influenced top managemen of urgency to complete the project version in nine months. Negotiations for t's sense Highly energetic and intelligent, Nick had the technical background to make the project a success. He delved into the technical problems and found some critical flaws that kept the next-gen DNA-sequencing instrument from working. Nevertheless, he was having difficulty in his new role as project manager. Although Nick and his team got the product out on time, top management was upset because Nick did not focus on managing all aspects of the project. He never provided them with accurate schedules or detailed plans of what was happening on the project. Instead of performing the work of proje manager, Nick had taken on the role of software integrator and troubleshooter. Nick however, did not understand top management's complaints-he delivered the product didn't he? Didn't they realize how valuable he was? 4.1 WHAT IS PROJECT INTEGRATION MANAGEMENT? 1. According to me the real problem in this case was the lack of communication between the nick and the top level management. lack of leadership can also be the main reason of the failure of this project. another problem is that nick did not have previous experience as manager .
2. yes case represent the realistic scenario about the situation where project has been underway for the three years because of the management problem. as it is very common reason for the unfinished project due to poor management, lack users and management involvement etc.

NO i dont think nick carson is a good project manager because he did not follow the various steps in project integration management. he only focus on the project. he did not have good project management skill and did not inform his top level management from to time about the progress on the project.
4. Top management should help nick by giving proper guidence to him and also make him aware that he was not focusing on all the aspects of the projects. top management should also organise training for the nick to improve his management skill. it is the duty of the top management to motivate and incourage nick and also provide all kind of support to him that help nick in sucessfully completing this critical project.
5. Nick should be a good project manger if he maintain proper communication with his top level management and other departments also. he shold improve the project integration managemnt and also nick should concentrate more as a project manager and report his top managemnt from time to time so that he can get better guidence from them.
