Instead of hiring an outside contractor and trades people, the firm decides to use its employees-secretaries, programmers, sales staff, and others-to do most of the work. The firm makes all its employees try painting and carpentry and other tasks needed for the renovation, and selects the people with the strongest skills in those areas to take time off from their regular task and work on the renovation. Is this strategy a good one? Why or why not?

Explanation / Answer

This strategy is not a good strategy at all as the staff working in office might not have the proper skills to work on these kinds of projects. Even if they have strong skills to work as painters and carpenters, then also they might not be experts to be working on such a large kind of renovation project. These semi-skilled people might not be capable enough of proper handling of hardware and building material which will make them prone to accidents and some might be serious. These people are actually office workers and should be working at what they are experts at and that is taking care of the official day-to-day work which they are hired to do.

There are different labour laws which govern the office workers and manual workers and therefore, the wage structure and benefits schemes also differ making it a bad strategy. The insurance types might also differ based on the nature of the work that they are supposed to work and the actual work that they are supposed to do.

Apart from this, if these people start working on the renovation work of the office then their own official work would suffer as they will not be able to devote time to their own work. In this case, either the work will be distribute amongst other employees who are not involved in the renovation work, thereby increasing their burden and thus diminishing the happiness of the employees and increasing their stress levels. Other than this, if the work is not distributed amongst the staff then the work will keep on piling for those workers who are working on renovation project, thereby increasing their workload after the renovation project ends.
