Explanation / Answer

Implementation of an ERP system is a phase wise process involving multiple resources from various functional backgrounds working on implementing the business requirements of the firm by mapping it with system capabilities. CIO of the firm spearheads the implementation of ths system and is responsible for its success or failure. Below is how a CIO can try to deterine causes of difficulties encountered in an ERP project that is going badly -

1.It is always better to bring in an outside consultant to identify and track down the causes for the less-than-optimal outcomes as they would be neutral in highlighting the issues irrespective of the phase or function in which the issues are identified.

2. An outside consultant will bring in experience from similar other projects that they would have implemented for other clients and hence can easily track down the issues and find out the rootcauses.

3. An outside consultant will bring in new tools and accelerators for effective issue tracking and fixing.
