Question
In 1821 Mexico gained independence from Spain and shares the continent with the United States and Canada.
In the last 100 years the wealth, productivity, technology and innovation of the United States has grown tremendously.
Certainly the United States has attempted to help many people and many nations around the world and has gone to war to help those less fortunate. Millions of American soldiers have died and millions more severely injured trying to support and protect other people around the world.
However, some say that although we share the continent with Mexico,
over the last 50 years the United States, despite efforts to help Mexico, has failed to:
adequately improve the Mexican economy,
win the war on drugs in Mexico, and
strengthen the Mexican border to limit immigration INTO Mexico from other countries.
Our failure to adequately help our Mexican neighbors over the last nearly 200 years has been addressed by President Trump.
His solution is to build a wall along the border of the United States and Mexico.
Until the wall is built people are still crossing the border.
The president recently signed an order that separates children from their parents when they illegally cross the border.
Imagine you are a member of President Trump's cabinet. What would you tell the POTUS to do?
What are the alternatives? What are your recommendations? Why do you recommend this course of action?
Explanation / Answer
My suggestion to POTUS would be to not pass this law. It will not be recommended for POTUS to separate the children from their parents on humanitarian grounds. Looking at the American culture of keeping the family together, this law will not find any favour with the average American as well and may have a great negative impact on POTUS image with long term harming effects. Although US have a “zero tolerance” policy against the illegal immigrants, still we can have alternatives to stop illegal immigration. This will not be good on humanitarian grounds and the plan can backfire on us subjecting us to world’s taunt and hate speeches.
One alternative to stop illegal immigration is to tighten the security forces on borders and also improve the level of internal intelligence for these kinds of incidences to go down. We need to strengthen our borders so that we can stop the problem of illegal migration. That can be done by increasing border patrolling and asking armed forces to help in containing the illegal migrants from the border. Other alternative can be that we can go ahead and deport the entire family from US for illegally entering US. In this way, we will not be separating the families and yet passing a strong message that US will not tolerate illegal migration from any of its borders. Yet another option can be that we can incentivize people who are immigrating with proper documents and deter people from illegally migrating to US.
With these alternatives, we will be able to not only deter people from illegally entering US but also show the humanitarian side of POTUS government. We will not face any flak from the humanitarian groups and will have a clear image. Even an average American would not like to see children separated from their parents and the message would go out that we are not against the humans or illegal migrant families but against the problem of illegal migration.
